Gazing from the front porch of her home in the rural flatlands of Edenton, NC, Susan Birckhead sees the ever-changing backdrop of Warren Grove Missionary Baptist Church. This vista has offered glorious sunrises, moody sunsets, changing seasons, and stunning weather events. It has undeniably called her to capture some of nature’s grandest moments as well as the double-steepled church, which the land and sky surround.
Warren Grove Missionary Baptist Church, a historic African-American house of worship, provides the anchor for the visions of nature’s beauty as well as the work of its members, past and present, with its imposing simplicity. Not the least of these accomplishments is its distinction as the site of the first Rosenwald School for African-American children in North Carolina, built in 1915.
Across the Field is a photographic diary of dramatic and inspirational images that Susan hopes will visually speak to you in a personal, spiritual, or soulful way—just as they have spoken to her.

The triangle is often used as the base for a strong composition in art representing strength, harmony, and balance. Across the Field coalesced a divinely inspired trio to form a perfect collaboration: Susan Birckhead’s (center) vision and dramatic images, Patricia White’s (right) rich connections to Warren Grove Missionary Baptist Church, and Sam Harding’s (left) photographic editing expertise. Three people with unique perspectives joined forces for a unified endeavor.
